Made some big headway the last few days. Not necessarily big by word count but big by process standards. You see, a part of me was worried that this final volume was going to blow up and become as big as the first three combined.
Such things are known to happen to me.
Especially since I decided that our three protagonists should each have a POV in the novel. This meant dipping into Lady Agova’s head for the first time, which was quite intimidating. And so I played around with the structure a bit and stumbled upon one that worked. Thankfully and interestingly, when I finally hopped into Lady Agova’s head, I found that I was in and out quite rapidly.
Part of this was changing the narrative style entirely. Where there’s an immediacy to my young outcasts who sprint into danger, into fights, into the unfamiliar, Lady Agova works on a completely different scale.
I also need to deal with the fact that Iron Wolf cannot speak. Not to mention the wild violence he’s been through since having the mask shoved into his face. All of this is fun and interesting and will make the novel better, but it took me some time to sort of land and settle on how to handle it all.
But the good news is that this novel will be much more manageable in size than I feared. It’s possible it’ll be about the same length as Howl, which will bring the whole of the series to about 100,000 words. Which, incidentally, is quite a bit shorter than Twilight of the Wolves.
A lot of my time has been dominated by getting this kickstarter sorted out, but I’m well on the way now. You should hear more about this soon, and I should have the novel all tied up and ready to go before the campaign begins.
