There is a benefit to rereading your novel as you go. For example, late last night I discovered the perfect spot to seed some information. Bits of worldbuilding and so on.
But the fun part of writing is discovery. For example, I haven’t yet added this information and I also don’t know what this information is! But I know this is the place for it. And so I’ll dive into the chapter in a few minutes and see what this means, what it looks like, and then I’ll trace the way it ripples out.
I don’t really have advice on how other people should write or build their worlds tonight but this is how I do it. Not with plans and schemes but by feeling my way through in the dark, stumbling, but sometimes sprinting as fast as I can, just flying on the keyboard, inventing and inviting what some might call the muses to live inside my dumb skull.
And what’s more fun than that?
Nothing!
So there are advantages to taking your time. Though I’m more of a sprinter, I do find it helpful and expansive when I slow down. The problem with slowing down, though, is that my head starts filling with new ideas, with novels and short stories that I want to write.
