Broken Katana: Writing Diary – 1

Over the last few days, I’ve been rereading Howl as I prepare to finally write the fourth volume to conclude this arc of the series. Returning to it three years later is interesting for a number of reasons.

For one thing, you can feel the energy in this little novel. I wrote it in six weeks, with three of those weeks being tied up with sick kids and then my own sickness sidelining me. It was a novel that came out like a torrent, full of energy and fun, and also a bit chaotic, structurally.

But that was its charm.

I did a bit of editing and rewriting as I went so the final version of this series will look a bit different from the original novels, but that’s just how it goes sometimes!

It is a fun series to return to and though I’m preparing to wrap up this narrative arc, I do think I’ll keep writing these novels.

But, yes, nothing too exciting yet in the construction of this omnibus that will collect these first three novels as well as the fourth volume.

You can follow along here, at this writing diary, but you can also follow along here at the Kickstarter page to be notified when this goes live. I’m very excited to launch this and see what comes out of it.

Already, I keep thinking of ways to expand it, to make the physical object prettier, nicer, cooler. Maybe illustrations! Maybe just some very nice artwork to accompany the novel, to work as a frontispiece.

Time will tell.
