MÖRKTOBER: 6 – Husk

I’m going to try daily to write something for Morktober. Often these will probably be poems, so come stop by daily to see what I’m up to. All prompts are based off Exeunt Press.

All art by Tony Tran, who also illustrated Horus & Motherfucker! Check out his patreon for more artwork.

This one took quite a bit more work but I was genuinely moved and just enamored by Tony’s art here. Though he’s working fast, I think there’s something overwhelmingly magical about the images he’s coming up with.

And so I wanted this one to be a bit of an epic, of sort. While I will forever fall short with poetry, I did my best!

Husk

Lay me down the day I die and pray
So he said and so I pledged again
On our last war on the way to Briar Bay
When you bled out and away, cut in twain

Lay me in heather and hay
Lord and Lady, take me away

Sweat and blood, we fought on in rain and mud
Drenched in dread I wandered the field of slain
And in the charnel flood I found my beloved
Deader than dead, heart apart, all in vain

Lay me in heather I loved
Lord and Lady, take my blood

Dragging you on long past the hundredth dawn
Your broken bones, my sled, past moor and glen
To Briar Bay’s Swan draped black to show you’ve gone
Bless the ground I tread, make holy all this pain

Lay me in heather you’ve drawn
Lord and Lady, take me down

And there as the Bay caught my eye that day
Crack and shed, I saw your spirit unchain
There at the Bay where at last I lost my way
Your soul fled leaving this husk to remain

Lay me in heather and hay
Lord and Lady, take me away

And on I hold your body dear
Forever here with all my tears
